GAIA Hypothesis

With the GAIA hypothesis proposed by James Lovelock he came to the conclusion that the earth is a self regulating superorganism. What I think that he is trying to get out is that the Earth is able to produce it's own natural resources whereas other planets are not able to do that because of what is not available on those planets. What he says is that the Earth's biosphere compared to the "dead stable" atmospheres of Venus and Mars - earth displays a tendency toward instability, but at the same time appears to adjust. Earth appears to have "designed" life to "consume" carbon dioxide and manufacture oxygen. With the earth moving towards instability he means that with the climb in global warming the hole in the ozone layer is causing a shift in the way that things are being produced. The shift in the way that the earth is the changing will cause great problems to how people will live and how we will function in the future.
