Play

I thought the discussion of play was very interesting. Children can relate and interact with animals through play. When I thought about it play has played a big role in our own species. Children at a young age learn to interact with other children though play. We develop social skills though play. As we get older play is looked down upon and we are told that we are being immature. Why is play seen as immature and why is it immature for people to play and interact with animals? I feel that it is good to interact with animals. Animals, especially pets, have a way of making a person feel good. Maybe if adults would go play with animals they would not worry so much. Play may seem immature, but I see it as a good stress reliever. What does any one else think about this?

  1. I think this articial supports your idea that play is needed in humans. the articial talks about how research has shown that play help keeps humans healthier because they regret less and allows them to escape certain worries. I also agree with midgley that play is needed to help expand the human mind needs to be imaginative and inquesitive to help them involve because play does allow the individual to look outside of the box and find new and unique ways of doing things. http://current.com/items/89973385_science-says-people-need-to-play-more.htm

  2. I agree that play is needed in humans. If people did not have fun and did some things like they did when they were little, life would be boring. I do not view this so much as an ethical issue, but as an issue that people should just think about. If people did not laugh, or did not have a good time once in a while, then they would not be able to appreciate the good things in life. The good things bring happiness to peoples' lives. When people are happy, then good things can happen in the world. These good things can reflect on other species. Happy people will respect animals and nature.

  3. I agree, play is an important part in human interaction. I agree with Melissa in the fact that I didn't see it as so much of an ethical issue, but one that should just be brought out into the light. play and laughter and just taking a break from one's everyday life plans and cycles can cause a realization to the things that aren't possibly as important, but are a great stress reliever none the less. everyone needs that from time to time.

  4. I agree as well. Play should be natural and incorporated into daily life. It is healthy to not only relieve your mind of stress and tension from work or school or the "daily grind," but it also stimulates a different part of your brain and develps other skills. Play is a powerful tool when developing emotional and social skills in children, and i think it retains the same benefit for adults. Play can either take you out of your comfort zone and stretch you in ways you would not normally work your body or mind, or they can return you to your comfort zone and give you that sense of release and pleasure. I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes, "Live sphereically, in many directions. Never lose your childish enthusiasm. And things will come your way."
