Natural Beauty

As one of the previous bloggers wrote, I too feel that natural beauty is different with people. Therefore you would first have to define what is natural and what is beauty? Is natural defined by the absence of humans; what is ugly to some might be beautiful to others. For example, some people feel that insects are nasty, ugly, and vile but they are part of nature. And aren't humans part of nature as well? So if you think a beehive is a natural beauty then why can't man-made structures be beautiful as well?

  1. I agree with the post that beauty is a preference for individuals, hence the saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I feel that McKibbin is so distressed about the human impact on the world, that he is unable to see the beauty in man-made objects. How majestic is the view from the Empire State Building? That is a man-made structure that allows us to enjoy and relish in the beauty that man has created. I do think that humans are capable of harming natural beauty and destroying things that we should not; however, I think it is true that humans can create some amazing things as well. I don't think the tone should be as negative against man-made structures. I feel that if we embrace our humanity as well as nature, it is possible to make a co-existence that is less taxing on nature and able to beautiful as well. People automatically think that anything man-made is a negative sign of our "manifest destiny" and desire to conquer nature. Does this have to be the common conception?
