Koko

Today's movie was very interesting. One things that intrigued me was Koko's personality. For some reason I felt that Koko was sad, mad, or frustrated more than she was happy. I got this vibe that she was trying to please her owners but she didn't know what they wanted from her and the owners were just guessing what Koko wanted. It was very interesting to watch Koko's daily life and how much she can learn. However how should humans intervene in Animal's life? Yes Koko is an exception but what about other Animals. If a specie is going extinct should we humans intervene or should we let nature control the species fate? Part of me wants to intervene and save all the animals, but the other part of me thinks that we should let nature decide who or what lives. Nature is a powerful force and I feel that humans should not mess with nature.

  1. I have to disagree with your statement that Koko seemed sad, angry, of frustrated most of the time. I couldn't help but think of how much she reminded me of some of the kids I've babysat before. It was uncanny how their mannerisms were just like hers!

  2. I agree with both. Koko did show happy tendencies. But she also seemed like she had a certain complacency about being in this environment. Koko seemed most happy when they introduced the new ape. That would tend to show she is more comfortable/happier with her species. I love seeing her interact with humans and showing she is learning a difficult process. Koko isn't human by the "normal" terms, but she is from an intellectual stand point.

  3. Its was simply amazing how Koko is able to pick up sign language at such a young age. It was also amazing how Koko was able to have sight recognition with certain objcets. Also how she was able to rationalize and connect tow different concepts and bring them together to make a new meaning. This is absolutely amazing and shows how we are related to gorillas and chimps.

  4. Yeah, I couldn't get over how the gorillas were putting together signs for words they didn't know. Like "finger bracelet" for a ring. I was pretty impressed when I heard that.

  5. I kinda thought the same thing Maggie, she seemed like she was sad more times than she was happy. But again she is a gorilla so i am not sure I really understand her facial expressions. The video was very interesting, it amazed me how she learned the signs for different things. I have a hard time teaching my kids sign language!

  6. i felt the same way about Koko's feelings. she definately seemed frustrated with what her handlers were trying to make her do. speaking, especially in sign language, clearly isnt in a gorilla's natural behavior. she wasnt allowed to be a gorilla, instead she was forced to be human. she couldnt roam freely like other gorilla's she had to be restrained; she couldnt get food either. necessities of life were provided only after a trained response. i think she wasnt happy because she wasnt allowed to be what she was, a gorilla

  7. i also think that what Koko was able to do was amazing. I never would have thought that a gorilla could do that. I couldn't believe it when she was able to find the right key to the door. As amazing as all of this was though Koko seemed to be sad in this type of environment. She seemed the happiest when she was with another gorilla.

  8. I agree that she seemed mad or sad, happy at times but i wouldn't say she ws happy with how she was living. I think everyone wishes we could intervene and keep something living but then the process of life would no longer exist. I believe that no matter how much you help something nature still takes its turn.
